AI CAM software in 2026: copilots, CAM agents and end-to-end job preparation
AI CAM software is software that picks machining strategies, tools and toolpaths for a CNC part with little or no manual programming. In 2026 the products fall into four groups: copilots and CAM agents that run inside an existing CAM system, AI features built into the big CAM packages, quoting tools that read CAD and drawings but stop before NC, and end-to-end job preparation that goes from the customer's files to a planned, programmed and priced job without a CAM seat.
Which one fits depends on a single question: who in your shop does the programming today, and in which software?
I run KinetiCAD, which sits in the last group, so read this with that in mind. I have tried to describe every product the way its own website does, and every claim about another company links to the source I checked on November 4, 2026.
The four kinds of AI CAM
1. Copilots and CAM agents inside your CAM
These plug into the CAM system you already pay for. You open the model in Mastercam, NX, Fusion or another host CAM, the tool proposes setups, operations and toolpaths, and a programmer reviews, simulates and posts.
- CloudNC CAM Assist works inside Autodesk Fusion, Mastercam, Siemens NX, GibbsCAM and SolidCAM, for 3-axis and 3+2 milling. CloudNC states that it "does not currently support other types of CNC machine such as lathes and mill-turns, though this is in development." Job Shop plans list at $995 to $1,499 per month. (cloudnc.com, pricing)
- Toolpath generates "3-axis and 3+2-axis toolpaths directly inside Autodesk Fusion", proposes workholding across setups, and pairs it with quoting. Automated CAM programming is in the Pro plan at $125 per seat per month, billed annually. (toolpath.com/product, pricing)
- Limitless Labs' CAM Agent works inside Mastercam, Siemens NX and Creo, and markets physics modelling: cutting forces, tool wear, and 3+2 and mill-turn kinematics with collision checks. Pricing is not published. (limitless-labs.ai)
- up2parts autoCAM completes "CAM programs and NC codes for your milling machines" inside GibbsCAM and Mastercam, and up2parts also builds work plans and calculations. (up2parts.com)
Best for: shops with CAM programmers who want them to go faster. The programmer stays in the loop and in the familiar tool.
2. AI features inside the big CAM packages
The incumbents are adding automation themselves: feature-based machining and machining suggestions in Siemens NX, Hexagon's ESPRIT with ProPlanAI, and automation in Fusion, Mastercam and hyperMILL. If you already own one of these, check what your current licence includes before buying an add-on.
3. Quoting tools that read CAD and drawings
Paperless Parts detects setups and features from the part file, and its Wingman reads prints, including GD&T, for quoting. (paperlessparts.com) CloudNC Quote Agent is a separate web app that reads CAD files, PDFs and drawings to estimate jobs. (cloudnc.com/quote-agent) These are strong at the estimate, but they do not produce NC programs: once you win the job, someone still programs it.
4. End-to-end job preparation without a CAM seat
This is where KinetiCAD sits. It reads the STEP model and the technical drawing, plans the job across the shop's own machines and tool magazines (lathe to mill), generates the NC programs, simulates them against the model before an operator releases them, and prices the job from those same planned operations. The quote and the program come from one plan, so a won job does not need replanning.
Best for: shops where the owner or estimator quotes and programs, and shops that cannot hire another CAM programmer.

Where KinetiCAD is behind
Honest list, because you will find it anyway:
- Maturity. KinetiCAD is an alpha in supervised pilot testing. CloudNC reports 1,000+ factories, and Paperless Parts reports 800+ manufacturers.
- US compliance. KinetiCAD's cloud is hosted in the EU, with on-premise deployment for enterprise. CloudNC, Limitless and Paperless Parts offer AWS GovCloud and US compliance programmes. If you do ITAR work, ask us about on-premise before anything else.
- Integrations. The copilots live inside five or six CAM systems, and Paperless integrates with many ERPs. We are earlier on integrations.
How to choose
- You have CAM programmers and they are the bottleneck: try a copilot inside the CAM they already use (CloudNC, Toolpath for Fusion, Limitless, up2parts).
- Quoting is the bottleneck and programming is fine: a quoting tool (Paperless Parts, CloudNC Quote Agent, Toolpath Core).
- Nobody has time to program, and the same person quotes: look at end-to-end job preparation. Send us a STEP file and its drawing and we will plan, program and price it with you.

Frequently asked questions
What is AI CAM software?
AI CAM software uses machine learning or rule-based automation to choose machining strategies, tools and toolpaths that a CAM programmer would otherwise pick by hand. Most products today run inside an existing CAM system such as Mastercam, Siemens NX or Autodesk Fusion and propose a program for a programmer to review.
Can AI write a complete CNC program from a CAD file?
For prismatic milled parts, several tools now generate most of a program from the 3D model, and a programmer reviews, edits and posts it inside their CAM. Fully automatic programs for every part, every machine and every material are not solved by anyone; treat claims of 100% automation with care.
Do I still need a CAM seat?
With CloudNC CAM Assist, Toolpath, Limitless and up2parts autoCAM, yes: they run inside a host CAM. KinetiCAD generates NC programs without a CAM seat in the shop, from the model and the drawing.
Which AI CAM tools support lathes?
As of November 2026, CloudNC says CAM Assist does not support lathes or mill-turn yet, Toolpath generates 3-axis and 3+2 milling toolpaths, and up2parts autoCAM targets milling machines. Limitless simulates mill-turn kinematics. KinetiCAD plans jobs across lathes and mills.
